Stefan holds a Masters in Landscape Architecture from UC Berkeley and a Diploma (Master) in Fine Arts from Enschede, the Netherlands, with a sculpture and photography emphasis. Prior to founding Thuilot Associates, he spent fourteen years working with numerous private residential garden and estate clients throughout the Bay Area. As a principal of Huettl-Thuilot Associates, Stefan Thuilot led design and construction teams that completed many residential, commercial and institutional projects. He was also invited to provide design consulting for commercial and public projects by other landscape architecture and urban design firms. These projects included the coordination & design of streetscapes, courtyards for multi-family condominiums, college plazas and residential communities in California. With the founding of Thuilot Associates in 2007, he began working on larger commercial and public projects for non-profit learning institutions, hospitals, and high quality housing and commercial complexes. These have allowed the firm to work at a much larger scale while still applying the same level of detailed design, attention to construction technique, materials and finishes, and awareness of individual garden experience.
Stefan’s work has been recognized for design excellence and technical merit many times, including six merit awards by ASLA Northern California and five excellence awards from Sunset Magazine. His completed landscapes have been featured in several books and design magazines.
In 2001 he helped coordinate the international Environmental Art project “Peninsula Europe”. He continues to have a strong interest in emerging design trends in Europe. Under his direction, the firm is constantly seeking opportunities for pushing design and construction boundaries forward in the US.
